處美國者,每曲兮若求崖,富而不貴,未嘗有善。問其故。美國之道,則從之,盡進步也。悲乎!以物為聖,好利惡義,常言無已,多字多辭,不情不志,何也?

To consider matter sacred, loving profit and thinking righteousness troublesome, speaking on without end, abounding in words and phrases — no feeling, no intent — what is this?
