The Anglican Church and Theological Bondage

Peter Akinola, Archbishop of Nigeria, on liberal theology in the Anglican Church (The Times [London]; HT: Al Mohler):

Having survived the inhuman physical slavery of the 19th century, the political slavery called colonialism of the 20th century, the developing world economic enslavement, we cannot, we dare not, allow ourselves and the millions we represent to be kept in religious and spiritual dungeon.

You read that right: an African called it “slavery”. Americans may harp on how “conservatives” (I’m not sure that’s a good term) try to legislate morality and thus impose their beliefs on others, but how often do we in the West assume that we’re more enlightened and expect others to follow because we alone have “reason” and “compassion”, while everyone else is an uneducated oppressor? Sorry, but the joke’s on us.

The archbishop also warned,

We will not abdicate our God-given responsibility and simply acquiesce to destructive modern cultural and political dictates.

Indeed, this is exactly what we see happening in the church in the West by social pressure and in mainland China’s TSPM churches by fiat. Not only do people cease to recognize the moral law and the gospel as completely compatible, contriving false dichotomies between “law” (the “antiquated” moral laws of the Old Testament that Jesus supposedly abolished) and “love” (defined oddly as social justice plus acceptance of all manner of licentious things, including toleration of no-fault divorce), but they also project the same onto the state as if it has the same role as the church – or is it the other way around?

Thus have we acquiesced to what is unacceptable because everyone else seemed to demand it, and then demanded it of brethren in “more traditional” countries (“more primitive”, our hearts say with a sneer).

It is truly ironic those who promote liberation theology with its repudiation of the entity called “the West” and at the same time undermine the authority of Scripture and attempt to mould their theology to their unbiblical beliefs, they have all the while been showing such disregard for the Global South and its orthodoxy that they have themselves been called enslavers.
