Freedom Bought Off

In Burma, they’re learning the power of money. Of course, the Singaporean movie I Not Stupid does make fun of the people’s proclivity to be bought off for elections and to stay quiet at other times, but people do seem to be more motivated by desire for stuff than for freedom. No wonder: the lofty goals, the more abstract ones, are too far away.

Isn’t money a certain freedom, an enabling instrument that affords power? For what is freedom but power? Brutal. Perhaps a brutal truth?

Ah, but only when we aren’t enslaved by greed is it really freedom to do anything worth doing. And anyway, you still must choose a god.
