Literally Materialist

Why is it that when we say literally, we really mean ‘physically and only physically’?

Maybe that’s one of the difficulties people have with sacraments: that only the physical act is literal, while anything spiritual must, in their minds, either be entirely separate or be figurative. I hope we can get past such an un-Christian understanding of the concept.
