Word and Picture in Leviathan

Behold this frontispiece, how seamlessly its images and words do work together.

’Twas the use of the time, that in pictures the reader read as in letters: image commented on word, and word on image, the twain forming one whole. The quotation from Job at the top is not a caption of the image’s ‘letter’ but a rubric of its spirit, impinging on its sense, how it is to be read.
