Veto

Convince the people that happiness consists in pleasure. Buy the public with the munificence of public funds. Bypass those of sober judgement, and appeal directly to the electorate for its consent to the expansion of state privilege and power.

This spectacle plays before my eyes, and I see in my heart that this Rome will soon be a Carthage too, ripe for destruction, if it turn not from its corruption.

  1. Despite my disagreeing with them, Greenpeace has a saying that sums this up well from another angle.

    When the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught, the last river poisoned, only then will we realize that one cannot eat money.
