How to Promote Chastity Among Christian Women

Encourage respect for the Blessed Virgin Mary as the greatest of saints, through whose chaste obedience Christ came into the world and saved us. Her image with that of her Son should be in every Christian home, that believers may remember and bless her godly example. Not everyone is called to give virgin birth, but every woman is called to obedience and some kind of motherhood.

For what God has done through her the Byzantines sing,

It is truly meet to bless thee, the Theotokos, the ever most blessed, and entirely blameless, and Mother of our God. The more honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who didst bear without corruption God the Word: thee, verily the Theotokos, we magnify.

  1. It’s certainly a failing among many Protestants to not properly integrate respect and imitation of saints into worship and life of Christians more generally. I don’t know if acknowledging Mary’s place will do much for women’s chastity (as is clear from Romanists and Eastern Orthodox), but it does provide a role model. When St. Paul says to follow him as he follows Christ, we’d be foolish not to appreciate the need for mimetically instilled virtue.

Even calling her Theotokos would go along way. She’s a beloved saint of God, but many Protestants treat her like some suitcase God had to use to get from Heaven to Earth. It’s sad and disrespectful, without even getting into the functional benefits.
